How to Optimise Your Pinterest Business Profile

Pinterest isn’t just for pinning wedding ideas, home decor dreams, and mouthwatering recipes. It’s a brilliant tool for online businesses that want to drive website traffic, boost sales, and get in front of more eyeballs.

If Pinterest isn’t already part of your marketing strategy, now’s the perfect time to jump in. Here’s how to make the most of Pinterest for business - so your pins stand out, rank higher in search results, and bring your ideal audience straight to you.

Create a Business Account

First things first: make sure you're using a Pinterest Business account. This unlocks professional features like Pinterest Analytics, ad tools, and more detailed pin information. A Business account helps you understand what content resonates with your audience, enabling you to refine your strategy over time.

How to Create a Pinterest Business Account

If you don't already have a Pinterest business account, you can set one up from scratch – simply select ‘sign up' on the Pinterest Home page and then navigate to ‘create a free business account,' as shown in the picture below.

If you already have a personal account that you've been using, you can convert that to a business account in your account management settings.

Pinterest as a Search Engine

Understanding Pinterest as a search engine is key to leveraging its full potential for your business. Unlike traditional social media platforms focusing on news feeds and interactions, Pinterest operates much like Google, but with a visual twist. It's designed to help users visually discover new ideas, inspiration, and products through keyword searches.

Pinterest Visual Discovery

At the heart of Pinterest's functionality is visual discovery. Users type in what they're looking for—be it home decor inspiration, fashion trends, recipes, or DIY tips—and Pinterest returns a plethora of images or “pins” that match the query. Each pin links back to a webpage, often a blog post or a product page, driving traffic to external sites.

Understanding Pinterest SEO

When Pinterest users search for a term, Pinterest's algorithm sifts through millions of pins to find the most relevant, high-quality content. By optimising your pins with strategic keywords in titles, descriptions, and even your profile, you make it easier for Pinterest to understand and categorize your content, thereby increasing its visibility to the right audience. Having a Pinterest SEO strategy is the single most important ingredient for your Pinterest success.

How to Optimise Pinterest for Business: Best Practices

1. Start with Keyword Research

Pinterest is a visual search engine, so SEO plays a significant role in your pin's visibility. Use Pinterest's search bar to discover what your audience is searching for. Make a note of these keywords so you can refer back to them when planning your content, optimising your profile and writing your pin descriptions.

2. Optimise Your Pinterest Bio

Your Pinterest Bio is an essential piece of information. It not only tells people discovering you on Pinterest about your business, but Pinterest will also read it when it's indexing your pins to decide what your pin is about and who it should show to. Make sure you are utilising this space with your Pinterest keywords!

Don't be tempted to include a typed URL in your profile bio, this won't be clickable and is wasted space that could be used for keywords. Instead, point people to the link in your bio.

3. Optimise Your Profile Cover

That large space at the top of your Pinterest profile is prime real estate for grabbing attention and promoting your latest product, collection or lead magnet. Keep this up-to-date and seasonally relevant.

4. Optimise Your Boards

Your Pinterest boards should be organized and themed around specific topics relevant to your audience. Use keywords in your board titles and descriptions to enhance their discoverability. Think of each board as a collection that tells a story about your brand and what you offer. Don't be tempted to add too many boards, or include boards that are irrelevant to your business (save those for your personal account).

How to Optimise Pinterest for Business: Optimise Your Pins

Craft Compelling Pin Descriptions

While your image catches the eye, it's the pin description that will hook your audience. Write clear, concise, and engaging descriptions that include your target keywords. Remember, Pinterest descriptions have a character limit, so make every word count.

Use Keywords In Your Pins

Keywords for your pins should be placed in the following areas:

  • Pin title
  • Pin description
  • Pin Image (or text overlay)
  • Alt Text

Use High-Quality Images

Pinterest is highly visual, so the quality of your images can make or break your pins' performance. Use high-resolution, compelling images that stand out in a crowded feed. Vertical images work best due to Pinterest's layout, with a 2:3 aspect ratio being the most recommended.

Ensure your images are relevant to your Pinterest content; anything too random will confuse the Pinterest algorithm and could result in less visibility for your pin.

Link to Your Claimed Website

Wherever possible, the URL of your Pinterest pins should point to a page on your claimed website. This could be a blog, homepage, sales page, collection page etc. Don't use the same website URL too frequently; Pinterest prefers a mix of URLs, including regular ‘fresh' links to new pages (blogs and products or services).
